Frequently Asked Questions
What is Fallow + Floret?
Fallow + Floret provides nonmedical coaching and support for people and families navigating chronic illness, major health transitions, unsupported neurodivergence and life upheaval. The name Fallow + Floret is rooted in my care ethos– rest is necessary and tiny blooms have their own medicine.
Is this therapy or medical care?
No. My services are nonmedical coaching and doula support. I do not diagnose, treat, prescribe, provide psychotherapy, replace hospice care, or offer emergency services. I complement your existing medical and mental-health team by supporting goals, adaptation, communication, planning, and connection.
What types of services do you offer?
· Virtual one-on-one coaching sessions for chronic illness adjustment, pacing, self-advocacy, building accessibility, and navigating major life transitions
· Session packages for long-term support
· Group workshops and social circles for community, connection, and visibility
· The Almanac, our resource library and writing for building your toolkit and sharing experience and insight
What exactly is a Chronic Illness Doula?
A chronic illness doula is a non-medical support specialist who walks alongside individuals and families navigating the complex, often isolating journey of living with a chronic or progressive condition. Unlike medical providers who treat symptoms, or therapists who focus on mental health pathology, a doula focuses on the whole person—the emotional, logistical, and identity shifts that come with a life-altering diagnosis.
Think of us as a bridge between the clinical world and your daily lived experience. We help you:
Process the grief of changing abilities and lost futures.
Navigate the “medical maze” of appointments, insurance, and specialists.
Develop energy-management strategies (like pacing and spoon theory) that honor your body’s limits.
Advocate for your needs with doctors, employers, and family members.
Create a support ecosystem that reduces the “mental load” of managing a complex life.
We do not diagnose, prescribe, or provide medical care. Instead, we provide the empathy, practical tools, and steady presence needed to help you live well within your current reality.
How is this different from life coaching or therapy?
While there is overlap, our approach is distinct:
Therapy often focuses on healing past trauma or treating mental health conditions through clinical frameworks.
Traditional Life Coaching often focuses on high-performance goals, productivity, and “hustling” toward a future vision.
Chronic illness doula & coaching support meets you where you are right now. We blend the goal-oriented structure of coaching with the deep, compassionate presence of a doula. We don’t ask you to “push through”; we help you build a life that fits your actual capacity. We focus on sustainability, self-trust, and reducing isolation rather than just achieving milestones.
What are the benefits of working with a chronic illness doula?
The primary benefit is relief from isolation. When you live with invisible disabilities, it can feel like no one understands the daily grind of fatigue, pain, brain fog, and administrative overwhelm. Working with a doula offers:
Validation: A safe space to grieve your losses without judgment or toxic positivity.
Clarity: Help untangling complex medical information and making decisions from a place of values, not fear.
Energy Conservation: Practical systems that save you the physical and mental energy usually spent on masking or over-explaining.
Advocacy: Preparation for medical appointments so you feel heard and respected by your care team.
Community: Connection to a network that understands the intersection of neurodivergence, chronic illness, and life transitions.
Who do you serve? Is your space inclusive?
Absolutely. Fallow + Floret is a proudly intersectional, BIPOC-affirming, and 2SLGBTQIA+ welcoming practice.
We believe that chronic illness does not discriminate, and neither should our support. As a queer, cis, disabled white woman, I have experienced firsthand where gender identity, sexual orientation, race and socioeconomic status deeply impact–for good and bad– how one experiences the healthcare system and receives care.
All Genders Welcome: Our services are designed for everyone, regardless of gender identity.
BIPOC Affirming: We actively work to dismantle the barriers and biases that people of color face in healthcare and wellness spaces.
LGBTQIA2S Safe: We use affirming language, respect chosen names and pronouns, and understand the unique challenges queer and trans folks face when accessing care.
Whether you are a trans person navigating a new diagnosis, a Black mother managing autoimmune disease, or a non-binary creative dealing with burnout, you belong here. You do not need to hide parts of yourself to be supported. Actually, I would advise you hiding is indeed poor medicine.
Why do you do this work?
I founded Fallow + Floret because I lived the gap I am trying to fill.
As someone with a late diagnosis of AuDHD and a history of interconnecting chronic illnesses and perinatal and postnatal burnout, I know the crushing weight of trying to push through a body that keeps changing the rules. I know the exhaustion of masking symptoms to keep a job, the grief of losing my old self, and the profound loneliness of feeling misunderstood by both the medical system and the wellness world.
My professional background in library science and health information has taught me how to organize chaos and connect people to resources. But my lived experience taught me that resources alone aren’t enough—you need someone who gets it.
I do this work because I believe that you are not a problem to be solved. You are a human being navigating a difficult terrain. My mission is to ensure that no one has to face the seasons of illness, transition, and uncertainty alone. I want to help you build a life that is not just survivable, but meaningful, grounded, and fiercely yours.
Are you credentialed?
I am currently training in trauma-informed care and end-of-life doula work. I am committed to clear scope-of-practice boundaries and ongoing professional development. (Specific credentials can be added as you earn them.)
I do have professional experience in disability navigation, crisis management, education, resource connection and community building. You can access my full resume here.
Booking & Scheduling
How do I book a session?
You can:
1. Book a 20-minute Vibe Check call to see if we’re a good fit and see what services serve you best.
2. Book a single 60-minute session — best for a single question or concern. Unsure— schedule a vibe check first and I can answer questions.
3. Join our newsletter and mailing list on Substack for regular updates, tools and resources you can download and use on your own.
What’s a Vibe Check ?
A 20-minute conversation to connect, discuss your needs, and see if we’re a good match. No pressure—this helps me smooth out my process while you get a sense of whether I can support you.
Where do sessions happen?
All sessions are virtual via Proton Meet (secure video). Meeting links are sent to registered participants before each session. No camera, phone calls and using other meeting platforms are available by request.
What if I need to reschedule or cancel?
Please notify me as soon as possible. I understand that energy and health can fluctuate unexpectedly.
Canceling or rescheduling:
One free cancellation per package — any reason, including flares, crashes, or bad days. No explanation needed.
After that, cancel or reschedule 24+ hours ahead at no charge.
Same-day cancellations (beyond your free one) may be charged 50% of the session fee.
Missed group sessions aren't refunded — but you're always welcome to miss one and rejoin when you're able.
If a health event interrupts your package: Unused sessions convert to credit, valid for 12 months. You will not lose what you've paid because your body changed the plan.
When in doubt, just tell me what's happening. Almost everything is workable when I know what's going on. Silence solves nothing; a one-line email ("bad week, need to move Thursday") always does.

Yes. Limited reduced-fee spaces are available each month. Please contact me privately to discuss.
Is insurance accepted?
Most services are private pay. Coaching and doula work is generally not covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance. I can provide a receipt for potential HSA/FSA reimbursement if applicable to the services provided.
Trauma-Informed Approach
Is your work trauma-informed?
Yes. I prioritize safety, trust, choice, collaboration, empowerment, and cultural humility. Participants control what they share—no one is required to disclose personal or traumatic experiences.
What if something comes up that feels intense during a session?
I notice signs of distress and slow down. You may pause, step away, use chat, turn off your camera, or leave the session—whatever feels most supportive. I can also offer grounding options or follow up privately afterward, within my role and boundaries.
Will I be asked to describe traumatic experiences?
Never. I use present-focused, choice-based questions. You can share as much or as little as feels right. We focus on what support you need now, rather than asking you to explain everything that happened. I have a required agreement for group sessions for members to honor my member code of conduct, which also prioritizes safety, privacy and grace to all participants.
Safety & Crisis Support
What if I’m in crisis?
The group and coaching sessions are not crisis care or emergency mental-health treatment. If you’re experiencing urgent danger, please know you don’t have to navigate this alone:
· Call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline)
· Contact your therapist, physician, or hospice team
· Go to an emergency department
· Call 911 if there is immediate medical danger
I understand that crisis experiences are individual and happen within context. If you would like to see what other crisis support or services that are available in addition to traditional 988 and police involvement, I have a crisis resource page here. Nothing here is being provided as medical advise, legal counsel or treatment.
Are you a mandatory reporter?
Mandatory reporting requirements depend on state laws (Michigan and Wisconsin both have provisions for child abuse and vulnerable adults) and my specific credentials. At intake, I will clarify my role and explain that if I believe you or someone else is in immediate danger, or if the law requires a report, I may need to contact emergency, crisis, or protective services. I will involve you whenever it is safe and practical.
Can I create a safety plan with you?
Yes. I can help you identify warning signs, coping strategies, supportive people, professional contacts, and ways to reduce immediate danger. This complements—rather than replaces—clinical support.
Community & Resources
Can I refer someone else to your services?
Absolutely. Word-of-mouth referrals help tremendously. A referral to someone you think could benefit means more than almost anything else, especially during my startup phase. I also have a Floret Forward referral discount for returning clients who have referred my services to others.
Scope & Boundaries
What can’t you do?
I do not:
Diagnose or interpret medical/lab results
Prescribe medications or supplements
Create therapeutic treatment plans
Provide psychotherapy or grief therapy
Replace hospice or nursing care
Offer legal advice or complete legal documents
Provide 24/7 availability or emergency coverage
What if my needs exceed your scope?
I maintain a referral network of therapists, physicians, hospice agencies, social workers, patient advocates, and other professionals. When needed, I will refer you appropriately and document the referral. If you need referral outside of my local area I’m happy to work with you to connect you with your next care step.
